Teen Driver Escapes with Slight Injury

The 16-year-old’s car ended up almost vertical along a retaining wall on the side of a building in Utah. Fortunately, no one else was injured and the teen driver escaped with a sprained ankle.

Utah Driving Laws for Teen Drivers

Older drivers are not immune to crazy accidents, but we thought we’d cover a few driving laws related to teen drivers today.

If a teenager is under 16, the only ways he can legally drive a motor vehicle are:

• With an appropriate permit
• On a licensed OHV
• On an off-highway implement of husbandry (such as a tractor)

A teen driver under 17-years-old may only drive during the hours between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. if:

• A licensed driver 21 or older is in the front passenger seat
• He is going to or from his job
• From a school-sponsored activity to his home
• On an assignment from a farmer or rancher
• In the case of an emergency

A teenager is not legally able to drive with anyone but an immediate family member until six months after the teen gets his driver’s license or until the driver reaches 18 years old—whichever comes first.

If your teen driver gets into a legal bind, don’t hesitate to contact a Utah juvenile defense attorney. There are possible defenses to different motor vehicle-related charges against teens, and an experienced attorney will best be able to advise you and your child on the proper course of action.
