Impulsive Behavior of Our Utah Adolescents

Adolescent behavior in our Utah Adolescents is often impulsive and centered in the present moment.  In a world where it is important to impress friends, experience the latest discovery and have a sense of invincibility, the adolescent, by nature, does not give much forethought to the impact that her actions will have on the future.

Value systems are still being formed, peer pressure is great and curiosity often takes precedence over prudence.  As such, the impulsive act does not necessarily reflect the basic, fundamental beliefs and value standards of the adolescent.

The police are primarily responsible to enforce the law irrespective of potential motive or quality of character of the wrong doer.  The prosecutor’s task is to verify that the wrong was caused by the accused and to seek appropriate redress for the crime.

While enforcement officials must focus on deeds and consequences, it is important to balance the adolescent’s potential and future against momentary, inappropriate behavior.  The defense attorney has a responsibility to protect that balance and potential by aggressively providing accurate, fair and compassionate, legal support.  This is accomplished first by educating the adolescent and his parents on all options available to them.  Second, the attorney should assist the adolescent develop a plan to correct the problem.  Third, he should gather all significant facts and evidence with the help of professional support, the adolescent and parents.  Lastly, he should pursue the most equitable and vigorous defense in behalf of the adolescent through the legal process and ensure the best possible outcome for the future of the young person.
